Mountain Bike & Outdoor First Aid Training
Practical first aid training designed for mountain bikers, ride leaders, coaches and outdoor professionals.
Cycle Mechanic 2 U & Southwest Guides will soon be expanding its training programme to include Mountain Bike & Outdoor First Aid courses in Dorset.
Our aim is simple: to provide recognised first aid training while making it genuinely relevant to the situations riders and leaders may encounter when operating in an outdoor environment.
First Aid That Makes Sense on the Trail
A first aid course in a classroom can teach you the fundamentals.
But what happens when the casualty is lying beside a trail, you're several kilometres from the nearest road, phone signal is limited and an ambulance can't simply pull up outside?
Our Mountain Bike & Outdoor First Aid training will combine essential first aid knowledge with realistic MTB and outdoor scenarios, helping participants develop the confidence to manage incidents when they're away from immediate professional assistance.
Training is expected to cover areas including:
Initial casualty assessment
CPR and use of an AED
Bleeding and wound management
Head injuries and concussion
Fractures, sprains and suspected spinal injuries
Common mountain biking injuries
Managing an injured rider on the trail
Environmental conditions including heat and cold
Incident management in remote locations
Contacting and working with the emergency services
Managing the rest of a riding group during an incident
First aid kit selection for MTB leaders and riders
Practical outdoor casualty scenarios
Who Will the Courses Be For?
The courses will be particularly suitable for:
Mountain Bike Leaders & Guides
Develop the skills and confidence to manage an incident while responsible for a group.
MTB Coaches & Instructors
Relevant training for those delivering coaching sessions, skills courses and organised riding activities.
Mountain Bikers
Ideal for riders who regularly head onto trails, trail centres, bridleways and more remote routes.
Outdoor Professionals
Suitable for instructors, activity providers and others who need practical first aid skills for outdoor environments.
Clubs & Groups
Bespoke courses will also be available for cycling clubs, MTB groups and organisations.
Supporting MTB Leadership Qualifications
First aid is an important part of operating professionally as a mountain bike leader.
These courses are being developed to complement the MIAS Mountain Bike Leader training already offered through Cycle Mechanic 2 U & Southwest Guides, providing riders with the opportunity to develop their leadership and first aid skills as part of a wider training pathway.
Where a specific qualification or certificate is required, course details will clearly state the accreditation, duration and suitability before booking.
Practical. Relevant. Outdoor Focused.
The intention isn't simply to move a standard first aid course into a different venue.
We want the training to reflect the environment in which mountain bikers actually operate.
Where appropriate, scenarios will take participants outside and put their skills into practice in realistic situations.
You might know how to treat an injury — but can you assess the situation, look after the casualty, manage your group, establish your location and organise appropriate assistance at the same time?
That's where realistic scenario-based training becomes invaluable.
